Speciality rock FAQs

Everything you need to know about speciality rock.

Rail ballast is the layer of crushed stones placed beneath and around railroad tracks, primarily made from durable rocks like granite or basalt. Its main functions are to provide support and stability to the tracks, ensure proper drainage to prevent waterlogging, absorb vibrations from passing trains and control weed growth.

The Australian Rail Track Corporations’s (ARTC) specific standards and requirements are detailed guidelines for materials used in rail infrastructure to ensure safety, durability and performance.

Armor rocks are large, durable stones used primarily for erosion control and shoreline stabilisation. These heavy, angular rocks are strategically placed along shorelines, riverbanks and around structures like bridge abutments and seawalls to prevent soil erosion and withstand the impact of water flow and wave action.

Gabion rocks are stones used to fill wire mesh baskets or boxes known as gabions. Gabions are used in various civil engineering projects for their durability and versatility. Gabion walls are effective retaining structures, preventing soil erosion and providing landscape stability. They’re also used for sound barriers along highways, riverbank protection, coastal erosion control and landscaping features.

Spalls are broken fragments of rock, concrete or other materials. They can be used decoratively in landscaping. They’re a cost-effective alternative for certain projects, such as fill material or in drainage systems. Additionally, spalls matching the original material can be used for repairs and restoring damaged surfaces.

Our materials are sourced from our local quarry suppliers in the NSW region.
